Workflow: record homework excuses

January 13, 2017 by Brian Foutty

One of the most interesting and entertaining aspects of teaching high school mathematics is getting the opportunity to hear the many and varied excuses from my students as to why they did not complete or even attempt to do their homework. I knew that if my students' parents could hear the excuses for themselves that those parents would help me provide the extra motivation necessary for my students to complete their homework and thus learn to their fullest potential. Once I got an iPad 2 in 2011, the ability to record students became a reality. Later, Evernote made the ability to record and immediately share (as well as save the file) the audio recording of the excuse even easier and faster.

Workflow (along with split screen in iOS 9) has made this process so easy and fast. I can record the audio, email it to the parent, and save the file for records archive in less than 20 seconds. Being able to share those student excuses (in their own words) with parents, has drastically reduced the number of students who do not do their homework in my classroom.
